Here at StoneTrash, we pride ourselves on the power and flexibility that we put in the hands of our sellers. Part of that is the ability to set your own price at whatever level you see fit. We are strong believers that supply and demand will guide pricing on our platform, as users revisit listings that haven’t sold in a while and realize that they may need to lower its cost; that being said, we thought this edition of TrashTalk would be a good place to offer some insight and best practices regarding this process. By the end of this article, you should feel confident that you’re well-equipped to competitively sell your material on StoneTrash.

Starting Off Strong with Research

In order to make an informed decision about what price to list your material at on StoneTrash, it’s critical that you undertake a bit of research first. Some great places to find pricing on comparable materials (besides a quick search on StoneTrash, of course) are Craigslist, eBay and Facebook Marketplace. The discontinued/clearance sections of many tile distributors should also feature this information. Prices here may vary by region, as some more densely populated market areas have higher demand, but this first step should be helpful to establishing a starting price for your listing.

Another way to feel out the market for your items is the “discount method”; this entails finding new material of similar quality and size, and then applying a standard discount to it (normally on the order of 50-80%, depending on condition). When you’re having a hard time finding remnant material that matches your item, this can provide an alternative means of market research. Sites like Home Depot and Lowe’s, as well as those of smaller local natural stone and tile specialty retailers, can be great sources in this department.

Review and Revise

Setting the price of your listing isn’t the only important part of selling on StoneTrash; it’s imperative that you continually review your listings in order to optimize your success. Examining what’s sold, how long it takes to sell at a certain price, and how much you have to discount it further are all critical steps in the sales process. In your StoneTrash account, be sure to visit the Sold tab of your Orders page frequently; it can be your best friend when it comes to figuring out what a new listing should be listed at, or why something may not be selling.

Don’t Forget the Fee

One of the greatest parts about StoneTrash is that listing your material is free; it costs you nothing to get started putting your excess stone and tile inventory up for sale. However, when material sells through our platform, we collect a 15% fee on the non-tax amount (note: sales tax is remitted to you 100%). Including our fee in the price is important to getting what you want out of the platform; to do so, you must divide the price you are seeking by 0.85 (1 – 15%). Bear in mind that this fee is inclusive of all others (namely the credit card processing fee), so you won’t have to account for anything else.
